Getting Started Again and Again
09.23.2014

After all these years I know that there are times when I don't paint much - like this summer - but the thing I've learned over time is not to panic.  You see stopping for a while isn't quitting.  Quitting on my art is unthinkable.  I find being creative, no matter the medium, is a lifeline.  My art is my companion and counselor and during those times when I've stopped painting for a while my life is just a little bit out of balance.  Now that I've begun to paint again I feel as if a breath of fresh air has filled my lungs.

Of course, the stopping and starting carries a risk of sorts.  Sometimes while taking long breaks from painting or drawing my nemesis, fear, steps in with a vengence.  All kinds of negative self-talk comes when fear steps in but I have a secret weapon.  That secret weapon is an art group I joined several years ago.  We meet in the spring and fall for eight weeks  each season .  I find that the support from like-minded people is just the thing to motivate and wash away the fear. Each person in the group brings something special to share perhaps without realizing it.  All  of us with very different styles, perspectives and ideas we need one another.  Correction.  I need them.

Now as I get reacquainted with my brushes, paint, pencils and imagination it's nice to know I've got this "support system" to push me along when I'm not feeling so strong and I'm ready to  push others along when they aren't feeling so confident.  I believe that's the way it's supposed to be in art and in life... being there to lean and be lean on.

So as I start again to paint I am grateful and excited; and with blank paper and empty canvases full of potential I will splash, scribble and revel in the joy of creating art.
