I'm Free To Be Me!
03.02.2015

"Flower Feelings" (Acrylic on Paper)

I love to make things with my hands and have come to discover that the same feelings of utter peace and contentment come to me whether I’m painting, drawing, gardening or using power tools to make things out of wood.  I also enjoy putting words together that create images in my head and draw out emotions buried deep inside.  Somehow writing things down in an organized way helps me to sort and examine and learn how to be a better me.

Unfortunately, in the past nearly every time I began a project of any kind I would bring this baggage, this self-imposed pressure and an expectation of perfection.  For a very long time this baggage derailed my efforts altogether but lately there’s something going on and I’ve begun to forgive myself for not being perfect.  My art and creativity is more like “play time.”  Over the past few months it’s been easier somehow to paint and experiment, splashing colors around just to see what will happen.

It’s awesome.

This self-acceptance is empowering, and freeing and I thank God for showing me that in my uniqueness I don’t have to be perfect.  What I am and how I create is just how God intended it to be.

I still cringe sometimes when I laugh outloud, or tell off color jokes, paint a lousy painting and even times when a profanity or two spill from my lips, but that’s okay… it’s who I am.  I am God’s creation with my own special gifts and talents.  Who am I to say it’s not good enough.  Who indeed…

How awesome to discover that I am free to be me.
